Las Vegas Mass Shooting Statement
Baltimore County Green Party
Statement on the Las Vegas Mass Shooting
People woke up on Monday morning to the news of a mass shooting in Las
Vegas, Nevada. As the details unfolded,
we learned that the shooter, a white male, was responsible for killing 59
people and wounding over 500 more, making this the largest mass shooting in
recent U.S. history. Between the hotel
room from which the shooter terrorized so many, and his residence, officials
recovered 42 guns, all of which are believed to have been purchased
legally. As occurs in the aftermath of
these shootings, the debate over gun laws and Second Amendment rights takes
center stage. Many progressives pledge
to work for policy change that will prevent another gun-related tragedy.
The Green Party knows that, despite those promises, policy reform on
guns is not going to happen. The Green
Party knows this is because our two-party system depends on guns to fund its
continued existence. The
National Rifle Association (NRA) has donated more than $3.5 million to current
members of Congress. 49 of 100 U.S.
Senators and 258 of 435 U.S. Representatives, both Democrats and Republicans,
have accepted NRA donations. As long as
our legislators are paid by the NRA, our Senators and Representatives will
actively fight against common sense gun policy that could prevent many more
senseless deaths.
The Green Party and its candidates do not accept donations from the
NRA. If you are serious about reducing
gun violence and about policy reform, join a political party that is as serious
as you are: The Green Party.
We hope you will join us at our next meeting on Monday, October 16th
at 6:30 p.m. at the Towson Branch of the Baltimore County Public Library.
